When customer shops online over web
Shopper browses at merchant site, adds items to shopping cart, and then finalizes purchase.(Note: Merchant now has all necessary data, including PAN.)
Merchant Server Plug-in queries the Visa Directory on the enrollment status of the PAN.
If PAN is in participating card range, Visa Directory queries appropriate Access Control Server to determine whether PAN is enrolled.
Visa Directory forwards ACS response to Merchant Server Plug-in.
Merchant Server Plug-in sends Payer Authentication Request to ACS via Shoppers browser.
ACS receives Payer Authentication Request.
ACS receives Payer Authentication Request.
ACS authenticates shopper by using processes applicable to PAN, then formats the Payer Authentication Response message with appropriate values and signs it.
ACS returns Payer Authentication Response to Merchant Server Plug-in via Shoppers browser. ACS sends selected data to the Authentication History Server.
Merchant Server Plug-in receives Payer Authentication Response.
Merchant Server Plug-in validates Payer Authentication Response signature.
Merchant proceeds with authorization exchange with its acquirer.
